1915年到1920年间，加利福尼亚大学两位教授Long（Joseph A. Long，1879-1953）和Evans（Herbert McLean Evans，1882-1971）为了研究大鼠月经周期，采用野外捕捉的灰色雄性大鼠（属于Norway rats）与雌性Wistar大鼠进行杂交繁殖，形成了新的品系大鼠。白化头巾（hooded），即头和四肢以及背部黑色或棕色，其它部位白色。与Wistar大鼠比较，攻击性较强，体型较小。与SD大鼠和Wistar大鼠的区别之一是，其视神经交叉的比例比较低，视觉中枢神经元的双眼视觉较好，视网膜色素上皮层更接近人的视网膜结构。 用于行为、认知和视觉方面的研究有较好的优势。
