1909年由C.C.Little在品系毛分离试验中建立。1929-1930年在亚系间进行杂交，建立了一些新亚系，包括当时称为12（现在称为1，即DBA/1）和212（现称为DBA/2）。DBA/2对动脉粥样硬化性主动脉病变的低易感性，高频听力损失，对听觉性癫痫发作的易感性，发生与人类遗传性青光眼非常相似的进行性眼部异常，对甲基苯丙胺的亲和力以及对酒精和吗啡的极度不耐受。腺癌发生率经产雌鼠为66%，未产鼠为3%，雌雄鼠均可自发产生淋巴瘤。抗DBA/1所生长的瘤株，但黑色素瘤S-91在DBA/1和DBA/2小鼠中均能生长。
